Why Leather Storage Matters More Than Most People Expect
Leather is a hygroscopic material it continuously exchanges moisture with its surrounding air. At high humidity (above 60%), leather absorbs excess moisture from the air, creating conditions where mold and mildew colonize the surface and begin enzymatically degrading the collagen protein structure of the hide. At low humidity (below 35%), leather releases its internal moisture into dry air, losing the natural fat liquors and oils that keep the fibers supple. Dry collagen fibers rub against each other without lubrication, and the surface begins to crack.
Neither process announces itself quickly. A leather jacket sealed in a damp plastic bag does not show mold in week one it appears after two or three months. Desiccation cracking does not appear in week two it shows up six months into a dry winter storage. By the time either problem is visible on the surface, structural damage has already occurred below it.
The most expensive leather storage mistakes are the ones that happen invisibly and slowly. The good news is that every one of them is preventable with the right information applied once.
Before You Store: The 3-Step Preparation Ritual
Never put leather into storage in the condition you last wore or used it. Body oils, salt residue from perspiration, food particles, and environmental particulates all continue acting on the leather surface during storage accelerating breakdown, feeding microorganisms, and setting stains permanently. What is a recoverable surface stain in October becomes a permanent embedded mark by April.
Step 1: Clean Properly
Wipe the entire surface with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove surface grime. For more substantial cleaning staining, heavy grime, or winter salt residue from leather boots use a leather-specific cleaner applied to a cloth rather than directly to the garment. Work in small sections, wiping with the grain.
What not to use: household multipurpose cleaners, dish soap, anything containing bleach or alcohol as a primary ingredient. These strip the surface treatment from leather and can permanently discolor or damage it. Critical: The leather must be completely dry before conditioning or storage. Sealing leather that is even slightly damp is one of the most reliable ways to create a mold problem. Allow at least several hours of air-drying at room temperature if you have cleaned with a damp cloth.
Step 2: Condition Thoroughly
Apply a quality leather conditioner to the entire garment or item using a clean, soft cloth, working in small circular motions. Pay particular attention to flex areas elbows, collar, closure areas, and anywhere the leather bends regularly during use where oil loss concentrates first.
Allow the conditioner to absorb fully for at least 30 minutes before storage. Conditioner sitting on the surface as a residue has not been absorbed and provides no protection during months of storage.
One important nuance: in high-humidity environments (NJ summers, particularly coastal areas), a very heavy conditioner coat left tacky on the surface can provide a nutrient substrate for mold. Apply a thorough but not excessive coat, allow it to absorb and buffer to the touch before storage.
Step 3: Prepare the Garment

Close all zippers and fasten all buttons or snaps (open hardware collects dust and can abrade surrounding leather during storage). Leather Jackets and Coats
Hanger: Wide, padded or cedar. Never wire, never thin plastic. The hanger's shoulder width should match the jacket's actual shoulder construction typically 17–18 inches. A shoulder flare of at least 2.5 inches distributes the weight of the leather across the full shoulder seam rather than concentrating it at a single point. Wire hangers create permanent shoulder dents over weeks of hanging that are extremely resistant to removal.
Cedar hangers are the preferred choice: cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) is hygroscopic it absorbs ambient moisture, acting as a small natural humidity buffer and its aromatic oils naturally repel insects that can damage protein-based materials.
Garment bag: Cotton, muslin, or woven polypropylene. Never plastic eliminates air circulation and creates a sealed microclimate that accumulates any ambient moisture. Many quality jackets come with their own garment bags; use them. If not, a clean white cotton pillowcase is an acceptable substitute for a single season.
Closet position: Leave space on both sides of the hanging jacket. Crowded garments restrict airflow and create dye transfer risk dark leather pressed against lighter leather for months will transfer color. This is a slow, irreversible problem that zero competitors warn about.
Hardware before storage: Close all zippers fully and apply a light coat of zipper lubricant (beeswax-based or a specialist zipper product) to the zipper tracks. Zippers left unlubricated during extended storage can seize a metal slider that worked smoothly in April may refuse to move in September.
What to never do: Store a leather jacket folded in a drawer or shelf or compressed in a vacuum storage bag. Leather develops permanent crease lines at flex points. Unlike fabric, it does not bounce back from extended compression. A crease set over a 3-month storage period is significantly harder to address than any other type of leather damage.
Leather Bags and Purses
The single biggest long-term storage problem for leather bags is shape collapse the sides sag inward, the bottom flattens unevenly, and structural elements lose their geometry. This is entirely preventable.
Shape maintenance: Empty the bag completely, including any dust or debris at the bottom. Stuff the interior with acid-free tissue paper, a clean, soft cloth, or a purpose-made bag insert to hold the three-dimensional shape. Do not use newspaper the ink transfers to the interior lining and can wick onto leather panels. Do not overstuff the goal is support, not stretching.
Position: Store bags upright on a shelf. Do not hang them by the handles for long-term storage the weight of the stuffed bag creates sustained stress on the handle attachment points, leading to stitching failure or handle distortion. If the bag has a protective base, store with the base down.

Dye transfer: Store each bag separately. Dark or richly dyed leather bags pressed against lighter bags or fabrics transfer color over months of storage. Each item should have its own breathable cover with no direct contact between adjacent pieces.
For high-value or designer bags: Stuff with acid-free tissue, store upright in the original box if breathable (poke a few ventilation holes in a solid box), and place one small silica gel packet alongside not inside the bag for humidity control. Check every 2–3 months.
Leather Boots and Shoes
Shape maintenance the critical issue: Boots stored without shaft support develop permanent crease lines where the shaft collapses. Boot shapers are the correct solution. If you don't have them, tightly rolled acid-free paper or a sturdy rolled magazine inside the shaft maintains the shape adequately. Cedar shoe trees inside leather shoes maintain the shape of the toe box and absorb residual moisture.
Position: Always upright, never on their side. Tipped boots collapse unevenly at the ankle, creating permanent distortion in the leather upper at the ankle seam.
Before storage: Never store wet or damp leather boots. Allow to dry completely at room temperature heat from a dryer or radiator causes leather to shrink and crack. Leather Pants, Skirts, and Lightweight Garments
Hanging is mandatory. Folded leather pants develop permanent crease lines across the thigh and knee these are very resistant to removal and can eventually become structural cracks. Use trouser hangers with felt-lined clamps the felt prevents pressure marks. Bare metal or plastic clamps can leave permanent impressions on softer leather grades.
Length: Ensure the garment doesn't rest on the closet floor. The hem crease created by a leather garment pooling on the floor over months of storage is extremely difficult to remove. If the closet bar height is insufficient, use an elongated hanger or install a secondary lower bar.
Suede and nubuck leather garments: Require the same hanging approach but are more sensitive to moisture. The breathable garment bag is especially important for suede moisture accumulation on a suede surface causes spotting, nap matting, and color changes that require specialist treatment. Suede should also be brushed with a suede brush before storage to lift the nap and remove any surface debris.
Leather Belts and Gloves
Belts: Do not coil tightly for storage. The inside of a tight coil develops permanent surface crease lines and the compressed leather loses suppleness at the fold points. Hang the belt vertically from a single hook or dedicated belt hanger, letting it hang in its natural relaxed curve. If hanging is not possible, lay flat not folded in a drawer or flat storage box. Never hang by the buckle: this puts sustained stress on the buckle attachment point and can stretch the surrounding leather.
Gloves: Lightly stuff the finger sections with thin tissue paper or a soft cloth to maintain hand shape and prevent the fingers from developing set crease lines. Store flat in a breathable bag not compressed, not folded.
Leather Furniture and Upholstery
For furniture being stored or moved: Clean all surfaces thoroughly, condition, and allow to dry completely. Place breathable cotton moving blankets between leather surfaces and any adjacent objects. Never cover leather furniture with plastic sheeting the microclimate under plastic promotes mold growth over weeks. Cotton is always correct; plastic is always wrong.
For leather furniture in rooms that are infrequently used: Condition every 6 months regardless of use stored leather that receives no conditioning loses its oil protection over time just as worn leather does. Cover lightly with a breathable fabric (a cotton sheet) to prevent dust accumulation without restricting airflow.

The 4 Environmental Requirements for All Leather Storage
Every leather garment and item, regardless of type, shares the same four environmental needs:
Temperature: 60–70°F (15–21°C), kept stable. Not extreme cold (which accelerates brittleness and makes leather stiff and prone to cracking when handled), not extreme heat (which breaks down surface treatments and accelerates oil migration out of the hide). Stability matters more than the exact figure a closet that swings from 55°F to 85°F in a single summer day is more damaging than one that sits at a consistent 68°F. Attics fail this test in summer; garages fail it year-round; basements tend to be cold and damp.
Humidity: 40–50% relative humidity. Below 35% RH, desiccation begins the leather loses internal moisture faster than it can be replaced, leading to stiffness and crazing. Above 60% RH, mold and mildew risk increases significantly. A small digital hygrometer ($10–15) eliminates guesswork. In NJ's humid summers, a dehumidifier may be necessary for the storage area. In winter when central heating drops indoor humidity to 20–30%, a small humidifier helps.
Light: Dark, or significantly shaded. UV radiation from sunlight oxidizes leather dyes and degrades surface treatments, causing progressive fading and brittleness. Artificial lights left on continuously in a closet present a lesser but real risk for items stored very close to them. Keep stored leather away from windows.
Air circulation: Continuous but gentle. Leather cannot be completely sealed. A fully airtight environment concentrates moisture and eliminates the air exchange that helps stabilize the leather's internal moisture content. Breathable garment bags and containers always.
Best storage locations: An interior bedroom closet on an interior wall. These maintain the most stable temperature and humidity of any space in a residential building. Worst: attic (extreme summer heat), basement (elevated humidity and cold), garage (all of the above simultaneously), anywhere near a radiator, heat vent, or exterior-facing wall.

Seasonal Storage Guide: The Spring and Fall Transitions
Spring → Summer
This is the most important storage transition for leather. NJ winters are tough on leather salt, cold, and low indoor humidity during heating season all stress the material. Spring is when the season's damage needs to be addressed before storage begins.
Give the jacket, boots, and bag their most thorough cleaning of the year. Address any salt damage, staining, or surface grime accumulated during winter use before it sets permanently.
Condition generously - the leather will be stored for 4–6 months and needs a full reservoir of conditioning protection.
Inspect hardware carefully (zippers, snaps, buckles) and lubricate zippers before hanging.
Hang jackets on padded cedar hangers, lightly stuffed, in breathable bags.
Check mid-summer (around July)- remove from storage, air out for a few hours in a humidity-controlled room, inspect for any mold or excessive dryness, and return to storage. This one mid-season check prevents small problems from becoming large ones.
In NJ: do not store leather in an attic or garage over summer. August temperatures in an unventilated NJ attic regularly exceed 130°F far beyond what any leather can tolerate without irreversible damage.
Fall → Winter
When taking leather garments out of summer storage, allow them to air out for several hours before wearing or inspecting closely.
Condition before first wear of the season even well-stored leather that was conditioned in spring will benefit from a refresh after a summer in storage.
Inspect thoroughly: check for any cracking at elbows or collar (from dry summer air indoors), test zippers and hardware, look for any subtle mold that may have developed.
If you find issues, address them now, in September or October, before the jacket goes into heavy rotation through winter. Problems caught at the start of the season are manageable repairs. The same problems discovered in December after two months of daily wear are significantly more advanced and expensive.
What to Do When Damage Has Already Happened
This section addresses one of the most common workshop situations we encounter in Lebanon, NJ: someone pulling a leather garment out of storage and finding problems. Here is what each finding indicates and what to do immediately.
Mold or Mildew (White Spots or Fuzzy Patches)
Take the garment outdoors immediately to avoid spreading spores inside. Using a soft dry brush, gently remove as much surface growth as possible with outward strokes. Prepare a solution of equal parts white vinegar and cool water the acetic acid kills mold spores. Dampen a clean cloth with this solution, wring it out thoroughly, and wipe the affected area without saturating. Follow with a cloth dampened with plain water to remove the vinegar residue. Apply leather conditioner generously and allow it to absorb over 24 hours. Repeat if the leather remains stiff after the first application. Desiccation caught early before the surface has begun to crack responds well to thorough conditioning. Shoulder Dents or Shape Distortion (Hanger Damage)
Shallow, recent dents sometimes partially self-correct when the jacket is hung correctly on a properly padded hanger and allowed several days. Permanent Creases from Folding
Creases set over a long storage period are resistant. Light creases in robust leather can sometimes be gently reduced by professional treatment involving controlled warming and careful stretching. Color Fading or Dye Transfer
